(2023) Gallery Paulina Caspari

Supported by Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media within the program NEUSTART KULTUR performance by Deva Schubert sound/3D design by Salvador Marino object by Clara Hoehre co-coreography/text by Juan Felipe Amaya Gonzalez curated by Teresa Retzer outside eye by Lotta Beckers
production by Wiebke Wesselmann

In the performance LEAKS, Deva Schubert explores the phenomenon of sharing (taboo) knowledge and the porosity of information structures. The concept of "leaking" refers both to the passing on and disclosure of secret information and to the slow seepage of fluids. Here, leaking is not only examined metaphorically, but also as a physical and biologica phenomenon. The artist uses her body as an instrument to graduall reveal personal and private spaces that exist within the institutiona framework and to question social norms.

GLITCH CHOIR transfers the phenomenon of the glitch into the analog space. At the center of the piece is the recomposition of a song of lament through glitching. Historically, public mourning has primarily been per- formed by women, so-called lamenters, who, in exchange for payment, give emotional expression to others’ grief for the deceased. It is mostly women, who are allowed to, but also damned to glitch the private into the public. The two female performers open up a collective body of mourning by creating a space of intimate multiresonance. In the vocal distortion already inherent in the lament, a transformation of mourning into a collective glitch takes place. What kind of choir emerges in the dissonance of frequencies?

What transpires when alpine traditions and digital culture collide? The performance "Sisters of Algolore" by Deva Schubert devotes itself to such social practices as whistling, yodeling, and dancing, rendering community experiential and spanning distance. In a rhythmic soundscape between alpine whips and algorithmic glitches, a hybrid reality takes shape in which past and future, nature and culture blur together. Three performers, a musician, and an intelligent alphorn machine move through these wetlands between virtual and vegetative reality, where root networks and algorithms form new patterns. In the echoes of the alphorn, the question arises: What is it that holds a community together? Together we execute an an imagination exercise for a non-apocalyptic, habitable future.

In "ASSEMBLY" a group of millennials (members of a generation that has reached adulthood at the beginning of the 21st century) speculates on the question of what a synthesis of social interaction, synchronicity and forms of being together might look like in the future - in view of the impossibility of leaving behind images and concepts of the past.
Including synthetic materials, organic objects, live recordings edited by real-time programming and a generative composition with three performers, a temporary community is created. The starting point is a choreographic score, which is based on the one hand on a sensibility for great distances and on the other hand on the attempt to bring together what is far away, for example through the use of digital tools as well as through a synchronicity of multiple spaces simultaneously.
The choreographer and visual artist Deva Schubert has set different thematic focuses for the performers on each day of presentation in the form of scores: an the examination of ecosystems and our environment ("Forecast no Forecast"), of memory and nostalgia ("Untouching / Millennial"), and of membranes and surfaces ("Renewable Synthesis").
“ASSEMBLY" interweaves elements of a distant alpine musical tradition, such as the music of the alphorn and yodeling, with the live edited recordings of soundscapes of where a specific venue is located. Sculptures made of organic and synthetic materials such as fur, PVC, and cables are further protagonists of the installative arrangement, whose ambivalent inner laws are constantly being renegotiated
ASSEMBLY originated as Deva Schubert's graduation piece at the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin (HZT), which was interrupted by the global pandemic, Covid 19.

Viral Reload: Holistic Memetics is a mixed media online work by Deva Schubert and Juan Felipe Amaya Gonzalez adapted from the live performance Viral Reload. The piece consists of a series of short video clips, animations, and augmented reality filters specifically made to be shared through Instagram. The piece addresses viral phenomena through posthuman performativity. It navigates and embraces the ambivalent state of avatars and online representations of the performers Deva and Juan Felipe. These bodies develop choreographic scores within an alpine and new age mythological landscapes, creating entities that have the potential to blur the boundaries of their bodies, between the interior and exterior, between their gender identities, and even questioning their own ontology by becoming replicas of themselves.

Amongst the entities that emerge are virtual human-like avatars of tongues and eyes (a “Cephaloglot”, “Oftalmosomat”, or a “Lingocorp”) communicating non-verbally

By intuitively feeling current and historical bodies, they become distorted, they become sketches of themselves, they become undercover and blurry. Without explicitly being programmed to perform the task of feeling, interacting, and relating, in “viral RELOAD” Deva Schubert and Juan Felipe Amaya Gonzalez speculate together with an alphorn about the future of togetherness, folk, touch, and otherwise unknown events.

	Age of Majority

(2019)Tropez Berlin
developed by: Deva Schubert and Dylan Spencer-Davidson
styled by: Nicole Walker
Dance performance: Dora, Effie, Ella Belle, Josephine, Maida, Mila, Jordan, and Sidonie

Born into a dying future, today's preadolescents are the first representatives of Generation Alpha – a generation likely to be faced with immense global challenges in their lifetime. Too young to be afforded a democratic voice, but born too late to wait around, many of them are starting to take direct action around the world.

Age of majority is choreographic performance by Dylan Spencer-Davidson, developed collaboratively with Dora (11), Effie (11), Ella Belle (11), Josephine (11), Maida (12), Mila (12), Jordan (10), Sidonie (11), and Deva Schubert. By consciously occupying public space and subtly disrupting social codes, the performers adopt »subject rebel positions« and test ideas around autonomy, self-esteem, identity formation, performativity and resistance.
